Curriculum Topic: Group Activity, Educator Demonstration, Virtual Friendly
Activity Type: Anatomy, Pregnancy
Supplies: Markers and Flipchart
Instructions:
Ask class what discomforts or “aches and pains” they are experiencing. Write them on a flip chart, then go back to discuss each, or discuss each one as it is presented. Ask other class members what they have tried, or heard about, for relief of similar discomforts. If they mention an exercise, allow the class to try it. Discuss how to prevent discomforts through exercise and nutrition; and offer solutions, reasons, and normalcy.
Set-Up:
Area for Presentation
Talking Points:
It is a positive sign that the body gives warning signs – don’t ignore them. What are some warnings you have had that have caused you to correct a problem (e.g., touching something hot, blister on foot, fever)? What are the signs of preterm labor? Discuss what to do if these signs occur. There are degrees of such discomforts as swelling, headaches, and dizziness. The pregnant person must determine what is normal or what needs attention. What do you tell them? Be sure to cover such problems as hemorrhoids, constipation, and incontinence that may not be brought up by a class member. It is important to keep all prenatal appointments for checks on those “silent” signals we cannot feel or see: blood pressure, protein and sugar in the urine, fetal heart tones, etc.
