Curriculum Topic: Group Activity, Practice
Activity Type: Shared Decision-Making
Purpose: Every pregnant person has the right to communicate with their healthcare provider.
Supplies: Nametags or other identifiers for each "actor"
Scripts or scenario cards
Instructions:
Provide each pair of students with two cards. Each card describes the role and the topic for discussion. Have all the students “practice” their conversations at the same time so that no pair is in the spotlight. After the activity, have the group discuss the conversations and what were effective and ineffective communication strategies.
Talking Points:
Sometimes pregnant women need to negotiate with their partners, other family members, nurses, or health care providers in order to get agreement for a choice they’ve made. Practicing those conversations in class can be very helpful.
Modifications:
Write your own scenarios. Either a class member or the instructor may role-play various reactions to labor, with an individual or the entire class acting as her support.
Possible role-plays are:
- contraction with vocalization
- movement
- moaning with a focal point
- loss of focus and panic
- pushing on all 4s
After the role play, discuss ways the partner helped, or could help in such a situation.
Another role play is to demonstrate the baby’s trip through the pelvis, showing the cardinal movements. (Tuck chin, rotate, extend, etc.)
