Curriculum Topic: Group Activity, Ice Breaker

Supplies: Large sheets paper; drawing supplies (markers, pencils, crayons)
Instructions:
Provide paper and drawing materials for each student – both the pregnant woman and her partner. The artwork produced can then be used as an icebreaker. For instance, ask each student to draw a contraction, a picture of a pregnant woman, or a picture of what they think birth will look like at their chosen birth locations. It is less threatening to have all the students hold up their drawings at the same time.
Talking Points:
Each drawing may speak for itself, although some students will be willing or anxious to talk about their art. Do not attempt to analyze the drawings, just listen and use this time to teach. For example, if a student’s drawing depicts a woman laboring in bed, you might ask “How did this woman know to labor in bed?” You can discuss that there are good medical reasons for some women to labor in bed, while other women prefer being out of bed.
