Curriculum Topic: Group Activity, Ice Breaker
Activity Type: Multi-topic, Pregnancy
Purpose: As an Opener: Reassures participants that they are not alone in their images of pregnancy, labor, birth.
As a Group Activity: Reassures the pregnant women that the partners do indeed know many different comfort measures.
Time Needed: 10 minutes (five minutes for students to come up with words, and five minutes for calling out the words)
Instructions:
Each couple or pregnant person is given a sheet which lists all the letters of the alphabet. Ask them to come up with a word about pregnancy, childbirth, or parenting that corresponds to each letter. The instructor calls out each letter and students take turns call out the words they chose.
Talking Points:
Discuss how many different images there are of pregnancy, labor, birth. With Comfort Measures, can use as a review to see retention of multiple different ways to comfort.
Modifications:
Divide the class into two groups: pregnant people and partners. Give each group a newsprint pad and several markers. The newsprint pad has the letters of the alphabet written on the pad. Ask each group to come up with a comfort measure that corresponds to each letter of the alphabet. Have each group present their list to the other group.
